As with any education related to allied health services, accreditation is key to a dental education. Through accreditation, the student can have confidence in their education they're receiving; that it has been reviewed by dental and health professionals and that it met or exceeded the standards they have established. Furthermore, the accreditation of a dental education ensures that the education is considered to be valuable in the field of dentistry.
The Commission on Dental Accreditation is the largest recognized accrediting agency for dental education. Operating under governance of the American Dental Association (ADA), the Commission accredits dental educations that meet their criteria works to ensure dental students receive a reliable, quality education.
Six regional accrediting organizations approve dental education programs as well:
- North Central Association of Colleges and Schools
- Southern Association of Colleges and Schools
- New England Association of Schools and Colleges
- Western Association of Schools and Colleges
- Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges
- Middle State Association of Colleges and Schools
